Elementary Grades
1st to 5th
At Back to Earth, the grades journey is rooted in a deep respect for the child’s natural development. In alignment with Waldorf philosophy, we honor the unfolding capacities of thinking, feeling, and willing–supporting the head, heart, and hands in every stage of learning. Rather than relying on abstract concepts or rote memorization, we bring learning to life through storytelling, beauty, movement, and meaningful work.
Our lead teachers ideally stay with the same group of students for multiple years, forming deep and consistent relationships that support trust, growth, and the unfolding of each child’s individuality. From the first day of Grade 1, students create their own beautiful lesson books, filled with their writing, illustrations, reflections, and discoveries. They move through a carefully crafted sequence of subject blocks—spending several weeks immersed in a single topic like Norse Mythology, local geography, measurement, or the animal kingdom. This immersive, integrated model supports deep understanding, artistic expression, and joy in learning.
Journey Through the Grades
Use the links below to explore the grades year by year.
Grades 1 and 2
In these tender years, children are met with warmth, wonder, and steady rhythms. Through story, song, and play, the class forms a strong foundation–rooted in joy, imagination, and deep connection to the natural world and one another.
Grade 3
This is a year of transformation. As children grow into a new sense of self, the class becomes a place of grounding, where building, farming, and practical work meet ancient stories and growing confidence.
Grades 4 and 5
These years are full of unfolding strength and curiosity. The class journeys into new landscapes of learning and identity, developing resilience, independence, and a deeper awareness of their place in the world.
A Living Education
Children in grades 1–5 experience a rhythmical, nourishing school day that includes:
Block Learning
Rather than rotating subjects daily, our students dive deeply into one subject at a time, engaging through stories, artistic work, movement, and hands-on activities.
Main Lesson
Each day begins with a two-hour immersive Main Lesson block focused on a single subject—like language arts, math, science, or history—for several weeks. This approach allows for deeper learning, creative exploration, and strong retention.
Teacher Looping
In keeping with Waldorf tradition, class teachers stay with the same group of children for several years. This continuity builds deep trust and understanding between teacher, student, and family.
Form Drawing
A unique Waldorf practice, form drawing supports spatial awareness, handwriting, concentration, and inner discipline. It is an artistic, movement-based precursor to geometry.
Handwork
Through knitting, crocheting, and sewing, students develop fine motor skills, perseverance, math sense, and a sense of beauty and purpose. These skills also build confidence and self-reliance.
Art Across Subjects
Every subject is infused with the arts—drawing, painting, modeling, drama, and music—because art deepens understanding, brings joy, and helps knowledge become part of the child.
Movement and Games
Movement is an essential part of the school day. Circle games, rhythmic activities, and cooperative games help integrate learning, develop spatial awareness, and support social-emotional health.
Storytelling
Academic content is brought to life through rich oral storytelling, which engages imagination and emotion. From fairy tales to biographies, stories are central to how children connect with the material.
Music and Singing
Singing, rhythm, and instrumental music are part of daily life. Students develop musical literacy and joy through seasonal songs, folk music, and opportunities to play instruments.
